Which massage modality do you prefer?

Which massage modality do you prefer?

Do you know there are over 350 different massage modalities? Most people are aware of the common modalities such as deep tissue, Swedish massage, and sports massage but there are so many more modalities available. Acupressure, Reflexology, Thai Massage, Watsu, Myofascial to name a few.

Here are a few popular massage modalities and their benefits:

  • Acupressure:  It is an ancient form of massage therapy that was often used in Traditional Chinese medicine. It can be compared to acupuncture without the needles. Instead of the needles, the therapist will use deep finger pressure to stimulate energy. Similar to acupuncture, the therapist applies pressure to specific points in the body to remove blockages in the body's life energy that could be causing the ailment.
  • Shiatsu: Is a form of acupressure. It is a traditional form of massage in Japan that employs rhythmic pressure at specific meridian points in the body for a few seconds to unblock the body’s energy.
  • Reflexology: Another massage which is based on acupressure, but it solely focuses on hands and feet.
  • Craniosacral therapy:  is a gentle, non-invasive form of bodywork that addresses the bones of the head, spinal column, and sacrum. It can be used to release compression in those areas which alleviate stress and pain. It is another type of bodywork that can bring profound healing from anxiety and stress.
  • Integrative massage: This therapy assists in the release of emotional issues trapped in the body. Long fluid strokes are used to move energy from the head down and out through the hands and feet. This is combined with the use of deep breath-work to aid the process.
  • Lymphatic: Manual lymphatic drainage is a type of massage based on an unproven hypothesis that it will encourage the natural drainage of the lymph. Which carries waste products away from the tissues back toward the heart.
  • Structural Integration: is a type of bodywork that focuses on the connective tissue, or fascia, of the body. Fascia surrounds muscles, groups of muscles, blood vessels, organs, and nerves, binding some structures together while permitting others to slide smoothly over each other.
  • Sports Massage: a form of bodywork that is typically used before, during and after athletic events to prepare the athlete for peak performance, to drain away fatigue, to relieve swelling, to reduce muscle tension, to promote flexibility and to prevent injuries. Depending on the needs of the athlete, a variety of techniques are used including classic Swedish strokes, cross-fiber friction, pressure-point work, and joint mobilization. It also helps with the athlete's recovery.
